Did you know the LGBTQIA+ community has largely impacted the legalization and accessibility of cannabis?
As we celebrate Pride month, it is important to acknowledge the relationship that exists between the LGBTQIA+ community and medical cannabis. Our Pride Blog post from last year goes into more depth on how cannabis activists throughout history have simultaneously campaigned for gay rights.
The two movements have overlapped for multiple reasons, but especially due to health concerns derived from the AIDS epidemic in the 1980’s. Members of the gay community were disproportionately impacted by the virus, an issue LGBTQIA+ members still face today.
While there were no other pharmaceutical options available to treat AIDS in the 80’s, many turned to cannabis to relieve their symptoms. The epidemic increased cannabis awareness and its accessibility for medical treatment for other conditions well, something that is still being fought for in 2022.
Cannabis is a natural path to health and wellness, and many members of the Utah LGBTQIA+ community today rely-on or can benefit-from medical cannabis for a variety of qualified conditions. Our vision at WholesomeCo is to lead a movement in normalizing and making cannabis accessible to all, regardless of race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation.
We are thrilled to be able to sponsor and participate in the 2022 Utah Pride festival and support such a diverse, strong, and necessary community. Our team is excited to continue our support of those who identify as LGBTQIA+ and their efforts to make Utah a more inclusive, healthy, and loving space for everyone.
