Everything You Need to Know about Live Resin Vape Cartridges

What is live resin?

Live resin is a cannabis concentrate made from frozen plant material. This means the crop is harvested in a way that preserves the plant's natural cannabinoids and terpenes.

Terpenes are oils secreted by the cannabis plant that provide each strain with a unique flavor and aroma. Each terpene can also enhance the specific healing benefits of cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are the compounds found within the plant that react with the body's endocannabinoid system.

Live resin concentrates are typically yellow in color with a consistency somewhere between wax and a thick sauce. They can be very sticky, so a dab tool or pre-packaged cartridge may be necessary in order to handle or consume. Products are known to have a high THC content, and exceptional flavors, which is why live resin is gaining popularity among patients.

How is live resin made?

Live Resin is made by extracting cannabinoids and cannabis-derived terpenes from freshly trimmed and frozen plant matter. Immediately after harvesting, plant matter is frozen in order to extract compounds within its trichomes. Trichomes are tiny hair-like structures where cannabinoids and terpenes live on the plant. This technique helps preserve the natural flavors and medicinal properties of the entire plant. The final product is referred to as “live resin”.

Cannabis-derived terpenes vs. live resin

Cannabis derived-terpenes are some of the compounds found within the frozen cannabis trichomes. When extracted, these terpenes provide distinct flavors and medicinal effects on their own, but when working with cannabinoids, the medicinal benefits of both compounds increase.

Live resin is made up of cannabis-derived terpenes and the cannabinoid THC, which gives cannabis its psychoactive qualities. The most common cannabis-derived terpenes include:

Live Resin vs. Distillate

The main difference between live resin and distillate is the overall goal of the products. Live resin is made to preserve as many natural properties as possible, including full terpene profiles. Distillate is made by extracting THC compounds from dried, cured, and trimmed cannabis under extreme heat and pressure. Distillate is made with the goal to produce a product with the highest amount of THC possible. This means all other qualities of the cannabis plant may not be prioritized, such as the strong terpene flavors users may notice in live resin.

What is a live resin vape? How does it differ from a regular cannabis vape cartridge?

Vape cartridges have made consuming live resin much more convenient. Cannabis is inhaled into the lungs where it is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, providing immediate relief in an easy and discreet way. Prepackaged cartridges usually come filled with .5 to 1 gram of cannabis oil and need to be screwed into a battery that produces heat.

Live resin cartridges are filled with live resin oil instead of distillate oil used in traditional vape carts. Patients may notice the THC percentage of live resin carts is lower than distillate oil cartridges. This is because live resin is not processed to the level that distillate oil is. Live resin concentrate has received higher quality ratings after users experience a high that is comparable to using flower.

Another way to differentiate between live resin and distillate oil is their flavor. Regular vape carts tend to taste more bland after terpenes are lost during the harsh THC extraction process. With a goal to preserve the unique individual flavors in cannabis, live resin carts have more pleasant and distinguishable flavors and aromas.
